THE STORY - I found this little pincushion so very beguiling formed from thin sheets of lacquered brass carefully crafted in the form of a barrow. The pincushion dates I believe to the 1920s and still has its original deep red velvet cushion with its gold braid edging. The barrow is so delicately made and I absolutely love the way the handles have been shaped with the brass being folded, which I hope you can see from my photos. The details of the barrow are wonderful with the sides being embossed with a wicker like pattern with its railings above it. The pincushion naturally sits with the handles on the surface but it can also be tipped the other way as it rests on the little stops on the back of the barrow. One of the wheels does goes round slightly but the other one doesn't want to move although I have not tried too hard as I don't want to damage it, although there appears to be no repairs just the original solder attaching the wheel as with the other side.
AGE - 1920s
CONDITION - The Pincushion is in good condition. The red velvet being the original has darkened with age as one would expect. There is some wear to the lacquer and this is especially true on the handles. As I have mentioned only one of the wheels moves smoothly around.
DIMENSIONS (Approx) - Length 3&3/4" / 9cm, Height 1&3/4" / 4.5cm, Depth 1&1/2" / 3cm
I love the thought of this Darling little pincushion sitting on the table next to the original owner with their hand reaching for the handles of the barrow to draw it closer to them to retrieve a pin. And I have to say I do marvel at how delicately it has been made it really a work of incredible craftsmanship. It would make a wonderful addition to any Collection, especially as I have to say during my research I failed to find another like example.
