Wonderful Large Wooden Victorian String Box

THE STORY - Now I can't exactly tell you why but these String Pots or String Boxes have really conquered my heart, I think it is because they are humble, incredibly useful but also very beautiful as they quietly bring order to what could be chaos. And how I loved this one, dating to circa 1860 as soon as my eyes fell upon it sitting on a stall at an Antiques Fair I recently attended. I think it was a combination of that wonderful rich coloured wood and the glorious patina it has acquired over the years with the large proportions of the Box. And it is because of its size I think this String Box was not made to be used in a domestic setting but instead in a commercial one, possibly a Shop or an Office. The colouring of the wood is wonderful and its turned pot sits upon a hexagonal base with a wonderfully turned lid screw on top with a hole at its centre with which to feed the string through.

AGE - Circa 1860

CONDITION - The String Box is in good condition and has acquired over its many years a beautiful patina. There is a chip to the wood on the top of the rim of the pot (best seen in the ninth photo), but this does not appear to effect the screwing on and off the the lid in any way and when the lid is on it is not seen. There are also the finest of splits to the varnish on the lid which can best be seen in the sixth photo.

I know we have so many gadgets now trying to install order in our busy and if you are like me slightly chaotic lives, but for me none of them compare with the simple, humble beauty of this String Box. It may not be used for string again but it has so much beauty to it and it certainly has the space to keep safe and ordered all the little things in life one isn't quite sure where to house.
