THE STORY - Sometimes a certain item maybe of simple conception, but it is that simplicity and the quality of the workmanship that makes it so special and that is certainly true of this Pincushion. The Pincushion is made from one half of an empty shell of a Walnut, with a plump cushion covered with a wonderful emerald green velvet. The Pincushion would I imagine date to the Edwardian Period circa 1910. The Walnut Shell has been varnished and is of most beautiful rich colour. Around the rim of the Walnut there is ring of fine red cord where it meets the velvet. And I absolutely love how plump and rounded the cushion is. Of course because of its rounded bottom the pincushion does not sit flatly but it does sit up, almost offering you your choice of pin.
AGE - Circa 1905
CONDITION - The Pincushion is in very good condition. There are no cracks or holes to the Walnut Shell that I can see. The red cord around the rim is still firmly fixed. The green velvet still sits securely into the shell, although it has faded as one would expect with age and it is possible to see some old pin holes from past use.
DIMENSIONS (Approx) - Length 1&3/4" / 4.5cm, Height 2" / 5cm, Depth 1&1/2" / 3.5cm
So there it is my little pincushion, what it lacks in sophistication it certainly makes for in charm. And the quality of the workmanship is wonderful, even more so I think as it is pretty likely that this pincushion was made by an amateur hand. And I would imagine made with love for it's owner and I am not surprised it has been cherished all these years.
